50th Anniversary of Rock and Roll

This should have been called the 50th anniversary of "That's All Right", Elvis's first song. It has been said that the first rock and roll record was Rocket 88 recorded at Sun a year or 2 early. There were a few stars at this. Justin Timberlake, Cameron Diaz, Isaac Hayes, and a few others. I never saw Justin or Cameron. I was to busy scrambling setting up two live shots. One was for the multbox feed of the ceremony and the other was for Joe Birch to toss to he ceremony. I needed two because the station thought there was going to be a satellite feed of the song being started by Scotty Moore(Elvis's guitarist)...there was but it was an audio feed for radio. There is nothing like scrambling to get something done hoping that it works. It did and it looked fine on the air but it is to much pressure for one person. As long as I save the shot, I don't get help from the station so this will never change.
I was planning on taking a few more pictures, but I was to busy from 4am to 1pm to actually stop and shoot any pictures. Scotty Moore happened to stop in front of our live shot location so I snapped off a few. The sun studio shots were at 4:30am.

What a boring long day. It was budget for the commission. I was told to be there at 9:00 but it didn't start until 9:30 and they really didn't start until 9:45. The worst part about the day was that we were going on early at 4:00 because of Reagan funeral coverage. The story we wanted didn't start until 2:40.That meant that I had to scramble to get 2 vo/sots cut and the live truck set up. I also had to stand at the meeting for most of the day. I can say that it does beat being out in the heat.

I hate working holidays. It makes me realize how important it is to spend time with family. It also makes me realize that I am a grunt. I have an important job yet I am not paid as much as people on the 3rd floor(sales). This day was tough because I had to cover a burn victim who came home to spend time with his family before he is to have more major surgery. John Quinn is only 5 years old but he was burned over 95% of his body last year. My heart aches just thinking about what life will be like for him. I don't think I want to cover another story about him. Here is the story.

Laura came to town on turn your tv off and read day. I had to laugh when 5 tv cameras where there to cover here. I took some of these pictures and wally green took the others. I was pool in one room so when she did the roundtable I didn't need to shoot video. It was a lot of work for just a 1:15 package. I think I hate these photo ops. I am glad that I don't work in D.C.

Vacation in Napa Valley. These are pictures of Francis Ford Coppola's Vineyard. He has a museum inside the Chateau that is filled with his movie memorobilia. I enjoyed visiting the place. Sofia Coppola mixed the audio for Lost in Translation here. She also grew up here in the victorian house way off in the distance in one of the pictures.
Francis almost lost the place in the late 70's because of Apocalypse Now. He was able to make it with having to file for bankruptcy. He realized the importance of the vineyard. It was started by Gustav Niebaum in the late 1800's. He made Inglenook wine. It actually was one of the best wines in North America but after he died and the land was sold off a company made cheap wine using the Inglenook name. Francis understood the legacy of the place and named his company Niebaum-Coppola Wines.

A FedEx Plane crashed at the Memphis Airport. The landing gear broke and one of the engines caught fire...no one was hurt. It was frustrating when we got there. The cellphone would not work in the area we were at and I had a hard time getting some one at the station to take my radio call to tune the live shot in. A man in the area had home video of the pilots climbing down a rope to get out. That was great video. If we didn't get that then all we would have had is the clean up of the plane crash. It was a cold day and I think I had a headache.

Thanks toSteven Russell for these pictures.

The news never quits especially on holidays. What should have been a low key day turned into stressful day. It is a 4th tradition to barbeque and the rumor is that the grill got out of hand. It later turned out to be fireworks shot off by some kids.
It was hot! 3 firefighters were hurt because of burns and 2 had heat exhaustion. My station even had a photographer pass out. The more I have done this the less I care about how geeky I look. That is why I wear a wide brimmed hat...I am a pale white guy and I need all the protection I can get.
The apartment complex where the fire happened is supposed to maintain their fire hydrants. The fire department had a problem with the water pressure and had to tear down a fence to get to another line. They got that fence down fast.
